Tuesday February 28, 2023

It is the last day of February...spring is only 3 weeks away!

We have some important dates approaching.  Our school will be hosting Parent Teacher conferences on the 9th and 10th (end of next week).  Be sure to log in to the booking site as soon as it goes live to book your time slot to discuss your child's progress this term!

Swimming lessons take place March 13th-17th at Canyon Meadows Pool.  Thank you for returning the consent forms, swimmer ability forms and submitting payment online as soon as possible.

Book Fair will take place at Woodlands throughout next week.  Students will be given an opportunity to 'shop' at the book fair, by viewing items available and writing a wish list. If you would like to purchase books, you will be instructed to send cash with your child on Wednesday or Thursday, or alternatively you can shop when you are at the school for Conferences.  Keep your eye out for further details.

We enjoyed the Grade 2-hosted assembly today that celebrated kindness at our school. Ask your child if they can remember one of the kind compliments we gave Mr Miller today!

Has your child mentioned any of their ongoing projects during Workshop time in the afternoons?  The last hour of the day is now dedicated to a creative time of exploring materials and topics of interest. We have had students working on booklets, models, paintings and cardboard creations to capture all kinds of ideas. Today we had a presentation on Pokémon, a story about 3 friends working at a toy factory and an instruction manual about how to use a Gameboy. So enjoyable!

Be sure to return your child’s swimming consent forms and ability forms as soon as possible.

Woodlands is holding a Scholastic Book Fair during the week of March 6-10th, and volunteers are needed to help things run smoothly.  See the message from Ms Montgomery below:

We are building our Book Fair Team! The Scholastic Book Fair at our school is scheduled for March 6-10, with family access on March 9th & 10th during part of Parent/Teacher Conferences.

The Book Fair is the perfect place for kids to explore must-read books, enhancing their home libraries with the stories they want to read.

Please complete the form below, and circle any dates/timeslots where you would like to help with such things as helping shoppers, processing sales, and packing up the Fair. Return the form to Raylene Montgomery (Learning Commons).

Thank you so much for helping us inspire independent reading and helping our school get new books for the Learning Commons and Classrooms!

Sincerely,

Raylene Montgomery
Book Fair Chairperson

It was our 100th Day of School today!

We had fun exploring the number 100 in different ways.  The students had number mats to count and gather 100 loose parts, we counted to 100 by 2s, 5s and 10s, we discussed what life was like 100 years ago and we wrote 100 thank you notes to build a thank-you garland, incorporating our kindness month into our 100 Day activities.

Our Thank You Garland makes a lovely bulletin board display!

An information package went home with students today about swimming lessons coming up in March.  I sent a School Messenger to all with more details.

Enjoy your extended long weekend!

Room 4 shared some very sweet valentines messages with each other today.  We made gnome valentine bags to collect our cards and treats and the kids were so excited to share.  Thank you for sending such cute mementos!

Tomorrow is the last school day of the week, and it is the 100th day of school!  We will celebrate by doing lots of 100-themed activities throughout the day.

Monday February 13, 2023

Everyone is excited for Valentines Day tomorrow.  Students are welcome to bring a Valentine for each classmate (there are 21 in total) to put in our Valentines bags tomorrow afternoon.  Bags will be sent home for students to open after school!

Wednesday is the 100th Day of School!  Last year, Kindergarten dressed up as 100-year olds to mark the day and many students have asked if they will be dressing up.  This year we will do a day's worth of activities that are based on the number 100, but we won't be dressing up (a whole day is a long time to be wearing a white wig and face-paint wrinkles!).  It will be just as fun, I promise.

It's a short week with Teachers' Convention taking place on Thursday and Friday, and the following Monday is Family Day, so we will have a 5-day weekend.

We read "The Most Magnificent Thing" by Ashley Spires today.  It is a great book to use as inspiration for our Story Workshop time, where students are invited to plan, build, create and imagine unique projects that display their talents and interests.  One of our students is fascinated by the human body...check out the clay model of lungs that he created!

Thursday February 9, 2023

Today we counted loose part collections by sorting the parts into groups of five and ten. We discovered that counting by 5s and 10s helps us count efficiently (counting by 3s and 9s was not as effective, we learned as well). This is a great activity to do at home to keep young minds and hands actively thinking and problem solving. Buttons, rocks, popcorn kernels or cheerios all make great loose parts.

Valentines Day is approaching and I know that kiddos always love giving and receiving valentines at school. Students are welcome to bring in valentines to distribute next Tuesday. We have 21 students in our class, so please be sure to include a card for each student to ensure that all kiddos feel included. We will have a classroom valentines celebration in the afternoon on February 14th and will do our card exchange then, for cards to be opened at home after school

Next week will be a short week with Teachers’ Convention taking place on Thursday and Friday, and with Family Day being a holiday on February 20th.

Thank you for sending in some great loose part treasures today!  We will put them to good use in the classroom.

The home reading program has been a great success so far, and I thank you all for helping your child form great reading habits!  The students are excited to see their reading logs grow and also to try the next level up on the reading cart.

February is kindness month…ask your child about the cute emojis we created today for our kindness bulletin board:)

Two items went home with students today:

First, a number practice sheet that is laminated so dry-erase markers can be used.  If you don't have dry-erase markers, your child can go over the numbers with a pencil or a pen with a lid on it, just to repeatedly practice their number formation.  Remind your child to form the number from the top down, as opposed to the bottom up.  The more practice, the better!

Second, a brown paper bag went home with a note attached explaining our loose parts collection.  If you have any small, clean items that can be used as counters, collage materials or story workshop pieces, we would be grateful for the donation.  Ideas include buttons, bottle caps, milk jug lids and more.  We just ask that it fit inside the bag...anything bigger is difficult to store.

There are no classes for students tomorrow...enjoy the long weekend!

Winter Walk Day was a bit of a bust!  The temperature dipped to -20 with the windchill, which is the official cut off for outdoor activity at school so we missed out on our afternoon jaunt.  We will try again tomorrow!

Our Snowflake mandalas are coming along...check out these beauties!

Tomorrow is the last school day of the week, due to teacher's professional day on Friday.
